It is the policy of Lindenwood University to award honorary degrees on a selective basis to distinguished individuals who merit special recognition of their exemplary achievements in alignment with the University's mission and values. Specifically, this policy allows Lindenwood to honor individuals that, through their excellence in any calling or occupation, have visibly contributed to the development of society and serve as a model for present and future generations.
It is a distinct honor to be awarded with an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Lindenwood University. This degree is a symbol of gratitude for the philanthropic efforts within our community to uplift underserved students and other marginalized members of our society. The R. Whittington Foundation's work to provide more than 359 scholarships to at-risk university students, 13 students graduating from college in 2023, we continue creating workforce pipelines for more than 500 young adults (with various corporations), feeding the homeless and less fortunate for the past 16 years, mentoring over 100 young adults, and the work the foundation has done in previous years to coordinate Lindenwood University's Black and White Ball are important examples of commitment to create a better society.
Additionally, the impressive efforts of the R. Whittington Foundation in facilitating the Dress UP and Suit UP Event (distributed over 1000 suits including shirts and ties, 250 pairs of shoes, and 50 laptops), Biking4Books (raising $155,000 for textbooks and providing over 500 bicycles to inner-city schools), securing 29 sets of washers and dryers for elementary schools ranging from St. Louis City to Ditter, Missouri, distributing over 20,000 care packages to 21 different elementary schools (grades K-5, ranging from St. Louis City to Jefferson County), partnering with St. Louis City and St. Louis County Police Department to implement the Victim’s of Crime Holiday Inititative (providing Thanksgiving meals to roughly 15,000 families), partnering with Walmart Corporation to feed over 5000 families in East St. Louis, Illinois, a partnership with Nike Inc. to distribute over 1600 pairs of tennis shoes to the youth of St. Louis County and St. Louis City, and our Annual Toy drive where we’ve distributed over 250,000 toys to children are wonderful examples of the ways in which we’ve have not only served our community but also served as a positive role model for future generations.
To this day, the R. Whittington Foundation has raised over $22 million for education and has sent a total of 359 kids to local universities where they have graduated.
